Deerhoofiness

Deerhoof released a new album this week, and Spin had the following to say: " San Francisco's sonic weirdos take another trip down the rabbit hole with their latest odyssey, Offend Maggie." OK.. You've got my attention. Cool name for a label, too: Kill Rock Stars. Here's an excerpt from the Spin.com article:

"Accuse Deerhoof of whatever you want -- just don't say they do the same thing twice. From the noise-blasted pop of 2002's breakthrough Reveille and the following year's Apple O', to the jagged minimalism of 2005's masterwork The Runners Four and the spaced-out orchestral grandeur of 2007's Friend Opportunity, the San Franciscan quartet have made a successful career out of musical left turns." Offend Maggie, is "a record jam-packed with enough jarring time signatures, disquieting vocals, and subversive pop melodies to make your head spin -- in a good way."

I spent time with some of these recordings, and they are certainly not without a reasonable quotient of weirdness. Music.Download.com said "if there were already nursery rhymes about broken glass and screaming bananas then Deerhoof would get sued." So, I was compelled to hunt down some MP3 files to present here from a rather quirky area of the online garden of aural delights. Prost!

[Since I've already started providing links to streaming media, I hereby declare whatever rule I thought I was breaking null, void, and so forth. Ok. So, here is a Deerhoof concert from NPR.]

"Sophie runs for mom who's up in sky
She was happy and beloved for life
We love her so much
Cruise the ocean do it more
Gold rush blue cash I adore
Wan wan run run run

Play on your harp string and soar
Play on your heart string it's sore
Wan wan run run run
"
