Rip. Sample. Mash. Share.

I was hunting down tracks by My Morning Jacket earlier, and stumbled upon The WIRED CD: Rip. Sample. Mash. Share. I recall when I received the physical CD in the mail in my November, 2004 issue of the magazine, so I was hit with some sort of odd nostalgic impulse. Needless to mention, I'm of course posting everything here -- almost four years after publication. An intriguing time capsule, and some cool, free music.

An NPR story: " We consider a new CD that encourages listeners to trade, remix and sample the tracks."

According to Wired: "these musicians are saying that true creativity needs to be open, fluid, and alive. When it comes to copyright, they are pro-choice. Here are 16 songs that encourage people to play with their tunes, not just play them.

There are 16 songs that encourage people to play with their tunes, not just play them. Sixteen artists who recognize that digital culture can be an advantage, not a threat. By contributing a track to The Wired CD, these musicians acknowledge that for an art form to thrive, it needs to be open, fluid, and alive. They have made the simple statement that when it comes to copyright, they are pro-choice. These artists - and soon, perhaps, many more like them - would rather have people share their work than steal it.
" Incidentally, here is the related post at the Creative Commons site.

"Known for the words that make you scream and holler
I'm Count Dooku to your Queen Amidala
Give a shout to Spiro or John Waller
I'm a student of the game and a bona fide scholar
So ease up on the bong to ease that coughin'
Butter's on the table now watch it soften
Bring in those beats and I'm a bring them often
I'm a keep rappin' when I'm in my coffin
Like a mind gone mad that is unwinding
In a padded room the walls you're climbing
Don't sign on the line if it looks binding
Ya have to get loose and find the lining

NOW get busy
